The three icons follow the EU’s published categories for labelling AI-generated and
AI-modified content.
Deciding which one fits your content is your judgment call. The
tool doesn’t provide legal advice on which applies, and picking one here doesn’t by
itself make a piece of content compliant.
Which icon to use?
- Nothing in the image is real, use “Fully AI-Generated”
- Real photo, AI changed something meaningful, use “Partially AI-Modified”
- Anything else / general disclosure, use “Basic icon”
The icon itself is optional, what’s legally required is the disclosure, clearly made.
When do you need this?
If AI played a role in an image that could pass as a real, unaltered photo of a real person, place, or event. This is required under Article 50 of the EU AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689), in force since 2 August 2026.

screen readers, and it isn’t legal advice.
Why label AI images?
Under the EU AI Act, viewers have a right to know when what they’re looking at isn’t a
real, unaltered photo.
A clear label helps you with disputes about
whether an image was genuine, keeps your audience’s trust, and shows good faith if your
use of AI is ever questioned.
For
images that could otherwise be mistaken for an ordinary photograph, eg. a portrait, a news
photo, anything showing a real person, place, or event.
